Liquid Diet

fad diets why are they bad

Liquid diets

have several variations. Most commonly, dieters choose one based on word of mouth or one of the many popular brands available widely in stores. In all programs, you must purchase supplies to make the liquid. All the companies say they are nutritious and healthy, and some provide personal counseling.

So what does the liquid diet look like? Generally, the liquid concoction is made up with a powdery substance and skim milk. This shake is to replace one or two of your daily meals, depending on which diet you choose. Many brands also market snack bars and/or a variety of vitamin-type pills. Despite the variations, they all have one thing in common: they are very low calorie and the products are pricey.

These diets range anywhere from 500 to 1200 calories a day. Without mentioning any specific chain, some sell their products through distributors and others can be found in the super market.

There are not a lot of positive things said about liquid diets in the literature. The products are very expensive, and some companies try to get you to hop on the bandwagon and sell their product as well.

The only reason someone should be on a liquid diet is to prepare for a medical procedure, under doctor supervision. There are many more cons then pros to this method of weight loss. First of all, a liquid diet does not offer fruit, grains, or vegetables, which are all needed for antioxidants and proper body functioning. Second, they do not contain much fiber, which could lead to constipation.

Like most other fad diets, liquid diets do not teach people how to eat healthy and maintain their weight loss. Without the knowledge of how to choose a balanced diet, long-term weight maintenance is difficult. We all hear about celebrities going on crash liquid diets, but nobody openly endorses them. For example, a few years ago Oprah went on a protein liquid diet and lost 67 pounds. She reports ‘ literally starved myself for four months,’ and she gained all of that weight back plus more. She stated on national television that regrets modeling such an unsafe way to diet.

These diets are just another way for the industry to rob you. One of the products on the market would cost at least $300 a month. Once again, the industry preys upon a society that wants to be thin but does not want to put in the sweat. For some people, it does not matter what the cost is or how safe the diet may be.

Bottom line, the low-calorie liquid diet is really not safe unless you are under close medical supervision. Researchers report that at least 75% of the weight lost from a liquid diet will be gained back within three years. These diets do not satisfy healthy nutritional needs.

The Liquid Diet is just one of the most popular fad diet, to go back to the main page click here, fad diets why they are bad?
